The book of Ruth is filled with such suffering. Naomi lost her husband and both of her sons. Neither of her daughters-in-law had any children at the time of her son’s deaths. Naomi means pleasant, but she no longer felt pleasant. She even said people should no longer call her Naomi, but Mara (which means bitter),’because the Lord had dealt very bitterly with her’ (Ruth 1:20). But had the Lord truly dealt bitterly with her? Was it possible that God had a wonderful plan for her, and for all of mankind, concerning which she could never even fathom the depth of its beauty and blessing?
