Matthew 5:14-16 A City on a Hill and a Lamp on a Lamp Stand March 17, 2019 By Matthew Cooke Leave a Comment After Jesus says that believers are ‘the light of the world,’ He helps us understand our function in the world with two illustrations. 1) You are like a city on a hill: You cannot be hid. It is foolish to try to hide, because it is impossible. You are one with the church, the people of God, and hiding is impossible for us. And 2) You are like a lighted lamp. God saved you i.e. ‘lit you as a lamp’ in order to use your redeemed life as a light to the rest of the world. To desire to suppress that function is to go against the intentions of the One you made you light. Christian, do not be ashamed, be who you are in Christ; shine forth!
