Sin bearing was not the ministry of Israel’s kings. They ruled, they led, they defended, they conquered, but they could not deal with the sins of men; that was the role of priests. There was a clear, & unflinching demarcation between kings & priests, & lest there be any confusion, their linage was even divided. The rulers staff would remain in the tribe of Judah, & the priests would be from the tribe of Levi. But one day a King would come who would also be a priest. This King would be immortal & reign righteously over Israel as King & serve them as Priest for time & eternity. This King would be the promised Messiah, & He would obtain the right to this exalted position by perfectly keeping God’s law. Jesus is that King! Listen and see how Jesus’ Baptism by John is related to this Old Testament Messianic expectation.
