For generations, the “abomination of desolation” seemed easy to identify.
Antiochus desecrated the temple. Sacrifices stopped. The sanctuary was left desolate. Daniel’s words appeared to have been fulfilled.
Then Jesus said:
“When you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet…”
Daniel wasn’t finished.
In Matthew 24:15, Jesus reveals that the greater desolation was still ahead—and that what sounded like the end of everything would ultimately reveal the finished sacrifice, the enthroned Priest-King, and the birth of a new temple made of living stones.
