Jesus told the disciples again and again of His coming suffering and death in Jerusalem. How did they respond? At first they grieved, but soon after they are arguing. Over what? Over which one of them is the greatest. Finally, they ask Jesus who the greatest in the Kingdom was. In response, Jesus gives one of the most vivid and memorable of all the object lessons in the Bible. He calls a child to Himself, and takes the child up in His arms, telling the disciples that unless they are converted and view themselves as being as low in rank as this little child that they could forget about being great in the Kingdom; they wouldn’t even enter.
The only way to ascend is to descend. Do you wish to become great? Then you must view yourself as small! Do you wish to rise? Then you must bring yourself low! Do you wish to rule? Then you must serve!
Matthew 18:4 Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
