He Took Hold: Hebrews 2:16-18

March 31, 2014 By Matthew Cooke Leave a Comment

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJesus not only charted the path to super-exalted glory through suffering, He takes hold of those He took on human nature to save, and helps them complete the same journey.  His faithfulness during the testing of suffering on this earth is our assurance that He can and will keep us faithful as we are tested in the same way.  He is our great high priest; He took on our nature so that He might faithfully and mercifully give us what we need and represents us before the Father.

He Takes Hold: Hebrews 2:16-18

The Son’s Intention Clarified

He takes hold of the seed of Abraham (2:16; Is 41:8-10)

Not of angels

  1. Mankind is not alone in rebellion against God
  2. There is no restoration available to fallen angels
    1. A test for gospel understanding
    2. It is the quality of the savior, not of the faith, that saves

Children of the promise (Matt 3:7-9; Jn 8:39; Rom 9:6-8; Gal 3:27-29)

Meet the New Boss; Not the Same as the Old Boss

We are children of God or of the devil (1 Jn 3:7-10; Rom 6:16-18)

Required Testing (moral obligation 2:17)

Greater Suffering (Lk 14:28-33; Mt 5:10-12; 16:24-25; Jn 16:33; Act 14:21-22)

From Wrath to Lovingkindness

To make propitiation for the sins of the people (2:17)

The long expected priest (1 Sam 2:35)
