The Servant and the Son: Hebrews 3:1-6

Therefore…

Holy Brethren

  • Israel was commanded to be holy
    (Lev 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:7)
  • Moses could not make anyone holy

(Rom 3:19-20; Gal 2:16, 21; 3:10-11)

Partakers of a Heavenly Calling

Consider Jesus

  • The command to hold fast came in response to the temptation to let go of Christ and fall back on what was safe and familiar
    (Heb 4:14; 10:23)
  • The Gospel is our confession
    (Matt 10:32; Rom 10:9-11; 1 Tim 3:16; 1 Jn 4:15)

High Priest

Apostle

  • Jesus was sent by the Father for the work at hand
    (Jn 3:34-35; 4:34; 5:24, 30, 36; 6:38)

The Servant and the Son are Both Faithful

Why Moses? Why Now?

  • In some traditions Moses was seen as greater than angels
  • It was Moses who the people were prone to trust in
  • Moses is the type, or shadow, of Jesus

Greater than Angels? (Num 12:6-8)

Type and Shadow

Moses Celebrated

  • The author is concerned with the degree of glory and honor, not the failures of Moses

Why Stay Positive?

  • Moses was the representative of God to Israel
    (Jn 1:17; 7:19; Rom 10:5; Heb 10:28; Mk 10:3; 12:19)
  • You cannot separate Moses from the Law, and the Law is good
    (Rom 7:7; Gal 3:21; Matt 5:17-18)

Rank in the Household

A Faithful and Honored Servant

  • Moses served his given role faithfully, and is granted honor
  • Moses pointed forward to Christ
    (Gal 3:24; Jn 1:45; 5:46; Lk 24:27)

A Son Over His House

If…

Perseverance is Absolutely Essential

  • Jesus as our champion, pioneer, and high priest is our hope and confidence that we will persevere.

Confidence and Hope are Hallmarks of True Christian Faith
